Elaine E. Schulte, MD, MPH, joined Montefiore in September 2017 as Vice Chair, Academic Affairs and Faculty Development, and Medical Director, Adoption Program, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM).
Dr. Schulte is one of the foremost physicians specializing in adoption in the country. She is a board-certified general pediatrician with more than 25 years of experience caring for children who have been adopted domestically, as well as internationally.
In her book, Caring for Your Adopted Child: An Essential Guide for Parents, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Schulte brings the knowledge and compassion adoptive parents need to provide the best care for their children. Caring for Your Adopted Child: An Essential Guide for Parents discusses how to partner with a pediatrician before adoption, help the child transition into the family, and care for the child’s medical, developmental and emotional needs.
Dr. Schulte has served on the Executive Committee for the Council of Foster Care, Adoption and Kinship Care at the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is nationally renowned for the comprehensive adoption medicine programs she developed at leading national healthcare institutions, including the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Schulte has served on national committees, for which she created policy, clinical guidelines and education programs for pediatricians and adoption agencies. She is also the proud parent of two daughters adopted from China.
