An integral part of CERC, the Harold Diner Special Care Dentistry Center was founded in 1965 by Dr. Harold Diner. Today, the dental program provides comprehensive dental care to children and adults with developmental disabilities and a variety of chronic medical conditions. A highly skilled staff offers wide-ranging special care dental services which accommodate the unique needs of this population. The facility is also able to offer sedation on an out-patient basis, which makes dental treatment possible for the most apprehensive and behaviorally resistant patient.
Dental services include a wide range of general dentistry and pediatric dentistry, to individuals with developmental disabilities throughout the New York City metropolitan area. Each year, the staff provides more than 4000 patient visits, including over 300 sedation visits. We are one of only a few providers in the metropolitan area that offers dental treatment under intravenous sedation for individuals with these health care needs, alleviating the need for these patients to require general anesthesia in an operating room setting for their dental care.
In addition to being a source of treatment to this at-risk and underserved population, the Harold Diner Special Care Dentistry program assures that another generation of dental professionals will be available to care for these individuals in the future. The clinic is home to a long-established clinical fellowship program, a one-year, full-time experience in which dentists receive clinical training in dentistry for persons with developmental disabilities. In addition, the staff trains residents from six other dental residency programs. Trainees have unique opportunities for interaction, both clinically and in a didactic setting, with a variety of other professionals who are involved with this special needs population. Our professional staff includes pediatric dentists, special care dentists, and dental anesthesiologists.
