Practicum
The child life practicum at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM) is an opportunity for child life students to shadow Certified Child Life Specialists working in a variety of clinical areas. The practicum is primarily an observational experience, with opportunities for reflection (including brief daily journals) and debriefing as students see how theory is applied to clinical practice.
The practicum is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a career in child life but are not yet ready for a child life internship. The practicum is aligned to the Internship Readiness Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities from the Association of Child Life Professionals. Students should enter the practicum with a grasp of the following KSAs: 1.01, 1.03, 2.01, 3.01. By completing the practicum, child life students further develop the following KSAs: 1.04, 1.05, 2.02, 2.03, 2.04, 2.05, 3.04, 3.05.
Completion of both a Child Development course (undergraduate or graduate) and a Child Life course taught by a Certified Child Life Specialist (undergraduate or graduate) is required before beginning the practicum. Proof of completion via unofficial transcript or eligibility assessment from the Child Life Certification Commission is required if accepted to the practicum.
The practicum consists of ten 8-hour shifts at CHAM (3415 Bainbridge Ave in the Bronx, New York). All shifts must be completed in person between July 20-August 21, 2026. There is some flexibility in scheduling; students should indicate any scheduling preferences on their application form.
University affiliation is not required for acceptance to the practicum. Please note that a limited number of spots are available, and application submission does not guarantee acceptance. Applicants will receive email confirmation of submission.
To apply to the practicum, students must complete BOTH of the following by July 1, 2026 at 11:59PM Eastern time:
