CME Information

GOAL

The goal of this educational activity is to provide pediatric caregivers with up-to-date, evidence-based information on a variety of important and current topics. Participants will gain knowledge of new developments in the field of pediatrics that will be applicable to their practice.

NEEDS AND EDUCATIONAL GAPS

• The recent Surgeon General’s Report on mental health for youth showed that rates of anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation have increased significantly among adolescents since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pediatricians need to learn how to utilize the standardized depression and suicide screening tools to detect adolescents who may be at risk for depression and suicidal ideations.
• Gun violence continues to affect many children in the United States, with recent increases in the numbers of shootings in the community. Providers need to learn to counsel about firearm safety and prevent injury in the pediatric population as well and gain tools in advocating for firearm regulation at local, state, and federal levels. 
• There are concerns for new and reemerging viruses causing significant medical illness in the pediatric population. Providers need to know about clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of new and reemerging infectious diseases. 
• Primary care clinicians are often the frontline providers for children and adolescents with knee pain and injuries and they need to know to be able to perform a basic musculoskeletal knee exam to recognize and treat common knee injuries. 
• This year’s Henry Barnett Memorial Lecture will update the providers with evidence-based best practices across the care continuum to promote healthier outcomes for extremely preterm infants and their families.
• Many children and families who are receiving medical care at Montefiore Medical Center are in great need of better housing and public safety, just two of the Social Determinants of Health that impact the families in the Bronx. It is important for pediatric providers to know the needs of the Bronx community and how best to advocate for their patients and their families.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After participating in this activity, you will be able to:

• Use standardized depression and suicide screening tools in order to create safety plans for families, and engage patients and families in conversations about treatment plans
• Perform a basic musculoskeletal knee exam to recognize and treat common knee injuries
• Identify ways that pediatric providers can work towards improving firearm safety and Preventing injury in the pediatric population, particularly within 4 domains: Advocacy, Clinical Care, Education and Research
• Review clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of new and reemerging infectious diseases
• Describe evidence-based best practices across the care continuum to promote healthier outcomes for extremely preterm infants and their families
• Better assess the social determinants of health conditions and needs of the patients in the Bronx
