Intended Audience

This activity is intended for pediatricians and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of pediatric patients.

Activity Goal

The goal of this educational activity is to provide pediatric caregivers with up-to-date, evidence-based information on a variety of important and current topics. Participants will gain knowledge of new developments in the field of pediatrics that will be applicable to their practice.

Statement of Need

Through didactic lectures and interactive workshops, this program is designed to educate pediatricians on a variety of current issues relevant to their day-to-day work. This program will contribute to the vast knowledge base needed for providers to be able to diagnose, manage and treat children in a variety of clinical settings. Pediatricians infrequently have to deal with medical emergencies in the office setting; however, initial management of these emergencies can have an impact on patient outcomes. It is imperative that office-based providers are prepared to provide the timely and necessary care until emergency personnel arrive.

Pediatricians routinely care for adolescent athletes – both in the office and on the field. Assessment of the injured athlete is a crucial skill for all pediatricians to have so that urgent/emergent conditions can be rapidly identified.

Children with craniofacial disorders require consultation with a variety of pediatric subspecialists and ultimately may undergo surgical correction of the deformity. Understanding the composition of the craniofacial team, potential treatment options and the implications of emerging technologies in the management of children with craniofacial disorders will provide the pediatrician with the necessary background to best care for these children.

Assessing teen sexual history is a part of a well adolescent visit. However, initiating this discussion can be uncomfortable and challenging to pediatricians. After attending this workshop, the pediatricians will be able to discuss about sex in a sensitive, direct and efficient manner.

Working at a safe and friendly environment is essential to the wellbeing and the happiness of pediatricians. However, the microaggressions can interfere with this milieu. Learning to understand and address the microaggressions are important parts of a daily work environment.

Physician fatigue and burnout are highly prevalent and have significant impact on professional careers. Physicians need to understand factors that affect physician career satisfaction and methods to enhance job fulfillment.

Learning Objectives

After attending this activity, you should be able to:

  • Assess an injured athlete.
  • Perform spine boarding for the injured athlete.
  • Prepare and plan for emergencies in the office.
  • Demonstrate techniques for managing airway and placing Intraosseous needles.
  • Review and summarize the evolution of treatment options for management of complex craniofacial conditions.
  • Summarize the current state of 3D printing and virtual computer planning.
  • Name the three high-risk taking behaviors of adolescents and explain the importance of the HEADSS exam.
  • Identify two comfortable techniques one can utilize when talking about sex with teenagers.
  • Define microaggressions and identify them in a variety of settings.
  • Utilize techniques and tools to identify, address and interrupt microaggressions in the health care settings.
  • Apply adult development theory to the physician life cycle.
  • List strategies and resources that can be used to facilitate effective career transitions.
