Our Team

CHAM provides comprehensive, compassionate, multimodal and individualized care to over 700 children with sickle cell disease (SCD). A team of dedicated hematologists, pain specialists, nurses, social workers, psychologists and child life therapists work closely together to bring innovative care to each of our patients from birth through adulthood. Kerry Morrone, MD and Deepa Manwani, MD lead this team. Dr Morrone has led multiple successful Quality Improvement projects resulting in improved patient satisfaction, better care and reduced thirty day readmission rates. Dr. Manwani is a noted researcher in the management and prevention of pain crises and development of novel treatments in SCD. The pediatric and adult SCD teams at Montefiore work collaboratively to transition youth safely from pediatric to adult care with an emphasis on a lifespan approach to care. The SCD clinical trials office is supported by expert and dedicated staff including Karen Ireland, CRA and Janine Keenan, Research CPNP.

Additional members of the team include Dr. Jennifer Davila and Dr. William Mitchell, nurse practitioners Christina McGrisken, Jeidy Vazquez, Ariel Brettholz, and Preethi Fernandez, and social workers Mikaela Roca and Katherine Schlesier.

Expert transfusion specialists ensure safe transfusions and a dedicated Bone Marrow Transplant team provides the opportunity for cure. A state of the art Day Hospital allows for individualized treatment of pain and other acute care complications in a medical home setting.
