Child neurology residents participate in a range of clinics throughout their three years of neurology training.
During the adult neurology year (typically PGY-3), residents carry a panel of adult neurology patients as their weekly continuity clinic. Common adult neurology disorders are rare in childhood but are integral to resident education. In addition, we have added a number of child neurology clinics with Dr. Moshe throughout the junior year.
During the final two years of training, child neurology residents participate in the following clinics on a rotating basis. Each location has administrative support for follow-up and test scheduling as well as for prior authorizations of medication and imaging. The Jacobi and CHAM clinics are each supervised on a rotating basis by two faculty members who provide expert guidance on the range of neurologic disorders, including epilepsy, headache, neuromuscular conditions, etc.
Jacobi Pediatric Neurology Continuity Clinic (Friday morning)
Located at the Jacobi Medical Center, this continuity clinic includes new patients and follow-ups. Trainees see a broad range of disorders, including some rarely encountered in developed countries. Residents are afforded the opportunity to work with an underserved population providing equitable care to all. Residents participate in this clinic while on the Jacobi consult service together with one resident on elective as well as rotating residents from Adult Neurology and Jacobi Pediatrics.
CHAM Neurology Continuity Clinics—New Visits (Tuesday morning) & Follow-ups (Friday afternoon)
Located at CHAM, residents care for patients in childhood and adolescence with often complex medical conditions and many comorbidities, as well as common neurologic conditions. Residents join this continuity clinic while on CHAM Neurology service along with one resident on elective (Friday afternoons only) as well as rotating residents from Adult Neurology, Jacobi Pediatrics and CHAM Pediatrics.
Neurocutaneous Clinic (one Tuesday morning and half an afternoon on Friday per month)
Trainees see all neurocutaneous disorders under the supervision of our pediatric neuro-oncologist and neurocutaneous epileptologist. The most common disorders seen at this clinic include tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis and Sturge-Weber syndrome. Residents learn and use evidence-based, guideline-recommended care from initial diagnosis through multidisciplinary treatments with chemotherapies and neurosurgical interventions. Both CHAM and Jacobi service residents participate in the Tuesday morning clinic with all rotating residents.
MDA Clinic (Wednesday morning)
Led by the Co-Director of the MDA Program, residents care for children and adolescents with muscular dystrophies, including Duchenne, Becker, myotonic and other neuromuscular disorders, such as SMA and myasthenic syndromes. Patients receive cutting-edge disease-modifying treatments and gene therapies through our program. Residents participate in this clinic during their Jacobi rotation and receive individualized education with patient panels tailored for high-yield educational experiences.
Dr. Moshe Clinic (Tuesday afternoon, once per month)
Residents are supervised by our Division Chief in this private clinic, usually following interesting patients seen as consults during inpatient service.
Neuro-Oncology Clinic (Thursday afternoon, once or twice per month)
Residents participate in our multidisciplinary neuro-oncology clinic with Dr. Dalvi and faculty from the Pediatric Oncology Department. Residents are encouraged to join tumor board where faculty from more than a dozen specialties discuss the patients seen in this clinic.
Rett Center Clinic & Epilepsy Clinic (optional Thursday)
Residents are encouraged to join the Tri-State Rett Center Clinic or Epilepsy Clinics on Thursdays when time permits, while on service, and/or as full elective blocks.
During CHAM service, the resident participates in CHAM Tuesday morning and Friday afternoon continuity clinics.
The Jacobi resident participates in Jacobi afternoon (morning) continuity clinic, the neurocutaneous clinic (one Tuesday morning per month), MDA clinic and neuro-oncology clinic (Thursday afternoon, once or twice per month).
All residents on elective participate in either CHAM or Jacobi continuity clinic once per week so that the rest of their time can be focused on their elective rotation.
