Services & Programs

Our Emergency Medicine Department at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore provides safe and immediate services to ill and injured infants, children and adolescents.

MMG_CFCC_2013_09-1054_316x210Multidisciplinary care is an integral part of our department.

We offer a full array of pediatric subspecialty programs, both medical and surgical, offering care to children 24/7, 365-days a year. Children and their parents have access to a variety of psychosocial and educational support services, including an extensive Child Life Program and Child Protection Services if needed.

State-of-the-Art Technology

At the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), we have the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment to manage newborn infants up to adolescents extending to 21 years of age—and any severity of illness. All rooms contain state-of-the-art resuscitation technology and a noninvasive digital computer that monitors the patient's heart and respiratory systems.

We have streamlined our entire process so each patient can receive the most efficient care possible while here, minimizing wait times. Several lab tests and X-rays are processed within the immediate vicinity of the Pediatric Emergency Department, and unlike many other hospital emergency departments, we are able to perform complex procedures on the premises. Additionally, our patient-tracking system permits all Emergency Department physicians and nurses to access information such as:

  • Attending nurse and physician
  • Patient location
  • Vital signs
  • Pending laboratory results

Doctors enter prescriptions directly into our Electronic Medical Record, which cross-checks the patient’s records with the medication. This system minimizes the possibility of human error by ensuring there are no duplicate prescriptions ordered and helps to limit dangerous or potential allergic reactions.

Our leading-edge clinical pediatric treatment areas include an asthma treatment suite, an axial computed tomography (CT) scanner and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine.

In addition to providing quality care to our patients, the Pediatric Emergency Medicine team has expertise in research. From pediatric pain management to limiting radiation exposure with point-of-care ultrasounds, our specialists focus on creating therapies that offer the best treatment for our patients. We follow the latest evidence-based guidelines for asthma management and care, and we have standardized care for fever in newborns and created innovative techniques for pain reduction management in children.
