The pediatric intensive cardiac care team is dedicated to the care of treating children with congenital and acquired heart disease in our Pediatric Critical Care Unit. The physicians are responsible for supervising the clinical care of critically ill patients admitted for surgery, cardiac catheterization and treatment of acute medical illnesses. Dedicated cardiac nurses, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, child life specialists and social workers all participate in the daily care of each patient.
The unit is just one of a few located in the tri-state area that provide extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) services and other forms of advanced mechanical and circulatory support, such as ventricular assist devices (VAD) to neonatal and pediatric patients with acute critical cardiopulmonary disease. The most complex surgical and medical patients are cared for in this multidisciplinary environment, where quality of care and patient safety are our top priorities.
