Expertise
At CHAM, we provide personalized and innovative approaches to care for your child with kidney cancer. Our pediatric kidney tumor program is directed by Dr. Daniel Weiser, a pediatric oncologist, and includes Dr. Steven Borenstein (pediatric surgery), Dr. Anthony Casale (pediatric urology), and Dr. Anna Zolotnitskaya (pediatric nephrology). When medically and surgically safe, we aim to preserve as much healthy kidney as possible and this sometimes requires specialized surgical approaches including robotics, for which our center has distinguished expertise.
Research and Innovation
Indications for partial kidney resections (also called partial nephrectomy or nephron-sparing surgery) are not clearly defined for many pediatric kidney tumors. With collaborative expertise in pediatric urology and robotic surgery, our CHAM team aims to maintain excellent cure rates while minimizing the long-term side effects of whole kidney removal when not deemed absolutely medically or surgically necessary. We conduct cutting edge clinical trials, including through our affiliation with the Children’s Oncology Group, to improve outcomes and also minimize the toxic effects of chemotherapy. Children with renal tumors are evaluated for a genetic cause of cancer through our pediatric cancer genetics clinic.
