    Personal Biography

    Lisa Heidi Shulman, MD, is Professor of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Since joining the Montefiore team, her clinical focus has been on the early identification and long-term management of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD),as well as improving access to care for underserved populations, identification and management of early motor delays and toe walking gait.

    In 1983, Dr. Shulman received a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics/Psychology at Brown University. She then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where she received her Doctor of Medicine in 1987. Dr. Shulman began her postgraduate training in 1987 with a 3-year internship and residency in Pediatrics at Mount Sinai Medical Center. In 1992, she completed a clinical fellowship in Pediatric Neurodevelopment at the Rose F. Kennedy Center, Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

    Aligning with her clinical interests, her research also focuses on other aspects of ASD, including early diagnosis, developmental outcomes in children with an early diagnosis, comorbid medical and developmental problems, parental stress and complementary and alternative medicine usage in ASD. Dr. Shulman is involved in numerous projects involving ASD, including one that began in 2019 that aims to identify the causes of ASD by carrying out genetic testing, phenotyping, and demographic profiles on the parents of children with ASD. Her work has been shared nationally at presentations and lectures and has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, books, review articles and abstracts.     From 2008 to 2019, Dr. Shulman has been named one of “New York’s Super Doctors: Best Physicians as Chosen by Their Peers.” She served as the Centers for Disease Control Act Early Ambassador to New York State from 2016-2019. Dr. Shulman is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatrics as well as Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. She sits on the National Autism Subcommittee of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and is a member of the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, and the International Society for Autism Research.
