Personal Biography
Mindy B. Statter, MD, MBE, is an attending pediatric surgeon at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Professor, Clinical Surgery at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Statter’s clinical focus centers on neonatal surgery and surgical ethics.
After earning her Doctor of Medicine at Emory University in 1983, Dr. Statter completed an internship and residency in general surgery at the University of Illinois in 1990. During her residency training she completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. She then completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan in 1992. Dr. Statter developed an interest in bioethics and completed a surgical ethics fellowship at the University of Chicago in 2010, and later earned her Master of Science in Bioethics at Montefiore Einstein in 2015. She is currently a faculty member for the Montefiore Einstein Bioethics Certificate Program.
Dr. Statter was the General Surgery Residency Program Director from 2012 to 2019. As a surgical educator, Dr. Statter focuses on incorporating surgical ethics into the general residency curriculum, with a particular interest in addressing moral distress. She participates in conferences that provide a safe environment to mitigate distress, reflect, parse out ethical and moral challenges and provide practical takeaways. Her work has been published in many peer-reviewed journals, and she has given numerous invited presentations nationwide.
Dr. Statter is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care and Pediatric Surgery. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Surgeons and a member of several professional organizations, including the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Pediatric Surgical Association. In 2004, Dr. Statter won the Robert Baker Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2010, she won the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor of the Year Award from the American College of Surgeons, and in 2017 Dr. Statter won the Surgeon Mentor Award from Montefiore Einstein’s Department of Surgery.
