CHAM Pediatric Research Track
Pediatric physician-scientists are critically important to advancing child health and our understanding of pediatric diseases. Despite this there is an increasing shortage of research trained pediatricians. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs (AMSPDC) have all highlighted the need for training programs to build the pediatric physician-scientist workforce.
The Montefiore/AECOM pediatric residency program has designed a research track that aligns with the American Board of Pediatrics approved integrated research pathway (https://www.abp.org/content/integrated-research-pathway-irp).
This pathway allows a trainee to develop and sustain research skills, prepare for a career as a physician scientist and acquire the clinical competence to independently practice pediatrics. The first year is primarily clinical with some protected time for research planning, while the second and third year provide 11 months of protected research time integrated with a broad range of experiences and continuity clinic. The pediatric residency program is responsible for verifying the research track trainee’s clinical competence and readiness to participate in an accelerated training program. The department of pediatrics has identified several interested research mentors to support the trainees research development. The program intends to recruit one resident per year to participate in this track.
